Various manuscript drafts of vols. 1 and 2 of Fitzhardinge's biography of Billy Hughes, including the complete and final draft of vol. 2. Extensive notes, newscuttings and photocopies drawn from major manuscript collections, the Public Record Office (U.K.) and published matter, relating to Hughes, his career, and political conditions of his time. Includes photocopies of Hughes' letters, memoranda, and cablegrams, illustrative matter and Hughes' educational and medical records. Letters to Fitzhardinge about Hughes. There are files that were central to Fitzhardinge’s research, career and academic work. Included are lecture notes, personal and professional correspondence, ephemera, family letters, notebooks and appointment diaries (1931-1993). There are notes and correspondence relating to Australian history projects, Fitzhardinge's final thesis on Roman fleets, photographs and negatives, illustrations and draft manuscripts of The Spartans.

Laurence Frederic Fitzhardinge (1908–1993), classicist, librarian, and historian, was born on 6 July 1908, Sydney, to James Frederic (Eric) Fitzhardinge, and Florence Marion. Laurence excelled in Greek and Latin at University of Sydney (BA, 1930) and continued his classical studies at New College, Oxford (BA, 1932; BLitt, 1933; MA, 1937). In 1934, Fitzhardinge was appointed research officer at the Commonwealth National Library, Canberra, and then as director of the School of Diplomatic Studies at the Canberra University College from 1944-45, where he lectured in Australian history. He also held positions with the University of Sydney (1945), the Australian National University’s (ANU) Research School of Social Sciences he went to the where he lectured in the classics. After visiting Oxford University Press (Britain) 1947-48, Fitzhardinge campaigned for a national dictionary register, which he commenced compiling. While president of the Canberra and District Historical Society, Fitzhardinge wrote W.M. Hughes in Search of a Federal Capital (1964) and Old Canberra and the Search for a Capital (1983). Other works that Fitzhardinge is well known for include: The Spartans (1980), The political biography of W.M. Hughes, That Fiery Particle, 1862–1914, vol. 1 published in 1964 and The Little Digger, 1914–1952, published in 1979. He compiled the first edition of the Annual Catalogue of Australian Publications (1936), worked on the early volumes of a Bibliography of Australia (1941), and was a major contributor to Nation Building in Australia: The Life and Work of Sir Littleton Ernest Groom (1941). He was elected a fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (1983) and of the Royal Australian Historical Society (1987).
