Diaries from 1870 to 1919, including 46 bound vols; 2 notebooks; charts, agreements; 3 printed scientific vols; a number of printed papers including prospectuses, relating to Arundel's enterprises and miscellaneous collection of letters, the main correspondents being Sir Albert F. Ellis, S.D. [Arundel] Aris; Lord Stanmore (first Governor of Fiji) and Professor A. Agassiz of Harvard College.

Arundel, who was born on 1/9/1841 and died in England on 29/11/1919, was a leading figure in the Pacific phosphate industry from 1868 until his death. He formed John T. Arundel and Co., which was absorbed into a larger company, the Pacific Islands Company Ltd of London. This in turn amalgamated with the Jaluit Gesellschaft of Hamburg to form the Pacific Phosphate Company in which Arundel held a managerial post. See Pacific Islands monthly, April 1974, pp. 59-61.
