- Biography/History:
-
Economics historian and academic. Ronald Max Hartwell was born at Red Range, New South Wales in 1921 and educated at the University of Sydney and Oxford University where he undertook doctoral research on the British woollen industry. Hartwell returned to Australia in 1950 to a newly established chair of economic history at the technological university in Sydney, later the University of New South Wales. In 1956 he became Reader in Recent Social and Economic History and Professorial Fellow in Nuffield College, Oxford, where he remained until his semi-retirement in 1977.
Soon after his arrival in Oxford, Hartwell published an article in the Economic history review titled "The rising standard of living in England, 1800-1850". Hartwell's article, which argued that Britain's industrialisation had improved the lot of the poor, generated controversy putting him at odds with Marxist historians such as Eric Hobsbawn. In later years, he was a visiting professor at the universities of Virginia and Chicago. He become assistant editor of the Economic history review in 1957 and edited the journal between 1960 and 1968. Hartwell died at Oxford in 2009.
