Diary contains an account of a visit to the New Hebrides, 1899. Heyer sailed from Melbourne on 26 March and visited Sydney, Newcastle, Noumea and Aneityum, reaching Lenakel on the island of Tana on 21 April. Apart from the voyage, there are references to missionaries, including Frank Paton and William Gunn, church services, social events, the illness of Clara Paton, landscape, climate and insects. Heyer left Lenakel on 13 May and returned to Sydney via Aneityum, Norfolk Island and Lord Howe Island. The diary is in one volume and is accompanied by two volumes of translation.

Clara Elisabeth Heyer, nee Kummer, migrated from Alsace-Lorraine, France to Australia with her husband George Heyer in 1868. Clara Heyer was the mother of Clara Paton, wife of Frank Paton, a Free Church of Scotland missionary at Tana, in the New Hebrides, and of Johannes Heyer, minister of St John's Presbyterian Church, Hobart. George Heyer was the pastor of St Paul's Lutheran Church, Germantown (Grovedale), near Geelong, Victoria.
