- Biography/History:

Great Britain was put in service in 1843. The first iron hulled, screw propeller driven ship and the biggest in the world, 3448 tons. Paddle steamers burned so much coal that little room was left for cargo, so independent companies turned to this type before the Navy, which feared iron may fragment.
