Contains handwritten copies of such things as General Orders (issued from Sydney), the Garrison Orders, extracts from the London Gazettes, the decisions of Garrison and District Court Martials, notices carrying names of soldiers granted leave of absence and the dates of inspections and Guards of Honour.

The convict settlements in Van Diemen's Land were administered by the military. During the Governorships of Franklin (1837-1843) and Eardley Wilmont (1843-1846) the 11th Regiment of Foot, and the 96th Regiment were based on the island. Its commanders included Lieutenant Colonels Elliot, Cumberland, and Hulme.
