This book explores the experience of women whose mothers called themselves feminists - young women directly influenced by the examples and teachings of mothers working toward equality and the transformation of the home, the workplace, and the world at large. Rose L. Glickman, a feminist historian and mother, has interviewed fifty women between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five of varied ethnic backgrounds and family structures, to find out where they stand on the issues central to their mothers' feminist perspective. Their candid, thought-provoking, often surprising responses reveal the complexities behind media generalizations about the "post-feminist" generation.
Daughters of Feminists begins by exploring the daughters' attitudes toward the word feminist itself. In subsequent chapters, each on a different topic, the daughters tell how growing up in a feminist household shaped their values, choices, and aspirations. They discuss work, family life, friendship, sexuality and femininity, self-image, public and private roles, feminism and racism. This book is an illuminating look at a diverse group of young women as they reinterpret their mothers' legacy to fit their own lives and times. It is filled with personal anecdotes that will engage mothers, daughters, and all readers concerned with the unfolding story of feminism in today's social climate.
