MS 1003 comprises correspondence, 1880-1963, relating to Thomas Griffith Taylor's travels and publications and some personal correspondence; manuscripts, published and unpublished, in typescript, handwritten and proof form; annotated printed material, including serials, books, pamphlets and reprints covering a wide range of subjects; and, miscellaneous material including press clippings, maps, medals, scrapbooks. The collection includes papers on Taylor's early years, 1880-1910; Antarctica, 1910-1912; Canberra and surrounding district, 1910, 1912-1928; Chicago University, 1929-1935; Toronto University, 1935-1951; Australian Institute of Geographers; Australian Academy of Science; and A.N.Z.A.A.S. (60 boxes, 10 fol. boxes, elephant folios).
- Biography/History:

Geographer, geologist and writer. Thomas Griffith Taylor was born at Walthamstow, England, in 1880. Taylor was senior geologist with the British (Terra Nova) Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 under Robert F. Scott; physiographer for the Commonwealth Weather Service, 1910-1920, and helped survey the Federal Capital Site, 1912-1913. He later became senior professor of geography, University of Chicago, 1929-1935, and head of the Department of Geography, University of Toronto, 1935-1951. In 1913, he and E.T. Quayle wrote the first textbook on Australian meteorology, Climate and weather of Australia. Taylor died in Sydney in 1963.
