MS 2505 comprises correspondence, notes, manuscripts, photographs, certificates, publications, scrapbooks and press cuttings relating to every phase of John Barry's life as a barrister, judge, academic, criminologist, penologist and historian. Much of the collection consists of notes and manuscripts of his addresses, articles and monographs. Correspondents include Elmer Barnes, Peter Brett, Sir Zelman Cowen, David Derham, Wilfred Dovey, Sheldon Glueck, Sir Eugene Gorman, Colin Howard, John McClemens, Norval Morris, Vance and Nettie Palmer, Mark Perlman, Sir Arthur Rylah, Geoffrey Sawer, Paul Tappan, E.J. Ward and Lady Barbara Wootton (80 boxes, 1 fol. box, 4 elephant fol. items).
The Acc03.094 instalment includes miscellaneous journals, ca. 1930-ca. 1969, and United Nations Congress and General Assembly papers relating to criminal law, 1955, 1958 and 1960 (1 box, 1 carton).
The Acc03.143 instalment comprises correspondence, legal papers, photographs, certificates, passports, cuttings and a CD-ROM (2 cartons).

Judge, criminologist, academic and historian. John Vincent William Barry was born in Albury, New South Wales, in 1903, attended the University of Melbourne and, in 1921, was articled to the legal firm Luke Murphy and Company. In 1926 Barry was admitted as a barrister and solicitor to the Supreme Court of Victoria. In 1941, he was appointed King's Counsel. During his time at the Bar, Barry stood as a Labor Party candidate for Federal Parliament, and was engaged by the governments of John Curtin and J.B. Chiefly to conduct or assist commissions of enquiry. In 1946, he was appointed Judge of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Barry was a foundation member of the Australian Council for Civil Liberties, and held the office of its president from 1944-1947. Barry was also an executive member of the ethics committee of the Australian Journalists' Association, and president of the Medico-Legal Society of Victoria, 1948-1949.
In 1951, Barry became foundation chairman of the Department of Criminology at the University of Melbourne. He was a member of the Parole Board from 1957 and was its chairman until 1969. In 1967, he was elected foundation president of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Criminology. As an author, Barry published biographies of Alexander Maconochie and John Price, collaborated on legal publications, contributed to the Australian dictionary of biography and was a book reviewer. His public lectures and addresses were published in Meanjin and the Australian law journal. In 1961, Barry was created a Knight Bachelor and, in 1969, he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Laws, University of Melbourne. Barry died in Melbourne in November 1969.
