The collection spans Murrell's entire career from the 1960s when he was a researcher in Papua New Guinea, until 1996 when his official relationship with the University of Adelaide's Faculty of Medicine ended. Research strengths of the collection include the research series on pig-bel (and other enteric or intestinal infections), Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, serum uric acid epidemiology and breast cancer, as well as papers on the development of teaching programs on general practice and community medicine. The papers also concern organisations such as the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Mothers and Babies' Health Association, South Australian Health Commission, the Adelaide Children's Hospital and the S.I.D.S. Foundation.
