Edward Charles Close was born on 12 March 1790 at Rangamati, Bengal. He arrived in New South Wales on 3 August 1817 with a detachment of his regiment in the Matilda and after several years in Sydney was transferred to Newcastle as an acting engineer. Close married Sophia Susannah Palmer in 1821 and resigned from the army to settle on his property, Illulaung, which adjoined government land for the township of Morpeth, at the head of navigation of the Hunter River. Close was appointed to the magistracy in 1825, then to the Legislative Council in 1829, resigning in 1838. Close laid the foundation stone of St James's Church of England, Morpeth, on 2 January 1837 and continued working in local affairs until his death on the 7th May 1866.
- Notes:
-
- Title devised by cataloguer.
- Inscriptions: "R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 101 Strand London"--Label inside back cover.
- Until April 2009, attributed to Sophia Campbell, 1777-1833, on the basis of a letter from Sydney barrister Vivian James Rundell Miles to John Alexander Ferguson which noted 'I believe the painter was the wife of merchant Campbell of Duntroon. The book came from there' (MS3200 Box 86 Folder 37). Research initiated by Sotheby's Melbourne for the May 2009 auction of a companion volume by Edward Charles Close confirmed that the two albums were by the same hand and that a range of other evidence supported the attribution to Close. Further information on the re-attribution is available from the National Library of Australia's Pictures Branch Trim file R09/28248.
