Terry Lean from Kettering, Tas. is a second generation shipwright and principal tutor at the Wooden Boat Centre, Franklin, Tas. The Centre runs the Shipwright's Point School of Wooden Boatbuilding who's graduates are awarded a Diploma of Wooden Boatbuilding. He speaks about his family background; his 4 years apprenticeship starting at 16 years of age; his father's work in boat designing and racing; his work in a boatshed in Pittwater, N.S.W.; his years of experience in boat building; his first experience at teaching in a formal sense at the Wooden Boat Centre, boat building, small boat handling, repairs and restorations; the future of boat building, timber resources being limited in the future as more material is sent to the mainland for Murray River boat restorations; sawmillers who presently supply the Centre with Huon Pine, Celery Top Pine, King Billy Pine.
Lean speaks about changes in traditions, fibreglass seen as the traditional material of the future; the composition of students, reflecting on the small number of enrolments fom Tasmania in recent years; the Centre's tourist operations; concerns over Tasmania's limited timber resources and specific materials required for boat building; the Centre's participation in public events, e.g. the Wooden Boat Festival; the Centre being the only government accredited training school running a comprehensive diploma course in wooden boat building. He gives a brief overview of his work, having started with the Centre in Nov. 2002 and previous to that a brief outline of his trip, sailing from Sydney to Tasmania.
