Tommy Burns (Noah Brusso) the reigning World Heavyweight Champion challenged by Jack Johnson, organised by Hugh McIntosh of Sydney who was also the referee. The £7500 was the total of the prize money: £6000 went to Burns and £1500 to Johnson. This was also the first time a black man was allowed to fight for the World Heavyweight Championship.
