MS 9741 comprises a printed copy of the document compiled by Murphy titled The New South Wales Mounted Police: 1825-1850.
- Biography/History:
-
The Mounted Police Unit in New South Wales was first formed in September 1825 primarily to resolve bushranger activities and attacks on settlers in the Bathurst and Hunter regions. Governor King had previously formed an earlier type of mounted force in November 1801, for security escort and message purposes, and for the apprehension of runaways. This Governor's Body Guard remained a separate identity until 1835 when it was absorbed into the Mounted Police Unit. The N.S.W. mounted police force predates the Canadian mounted police by about 50 years.
