Dr. Margaret Friedel recalls her early life and opportunities; her childhood (7-17 years) at Ricketts Point on Port Phillip Bay, Vic.; her early education, her Commonwealth scholarship; her arrival in Alice Springs, N.T. as a research scientist for the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in 1972; her initial research focus being on ground based assessment of the nutrient dynamics of central Australian rangelands; her early work with the Alice Springs office of CSIRO, who's work at that time was geared to improving the systems used by the pastoral industry, which was the predominant land use in the Australian semi-arid zone; her role in the rehabilitation of grazing lands, tourism futures, fire ecology, and planning procedures for ecologically sustainable land use in the rangelands.

Margaret Friedel, Research leader and Officer in Charge, CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems, Alice Springs, N.T. During 1994-1996 Dr Friedel was a member of the Federal Government's State of the Environment Land Resources Reference Group as a specialist on arid Australia.
