Robert Lee, psychologist and aviation safety consultant, talks about his family background; studying psychology at the Australian National University (ANU), completing an Hons degree in 1970; his Ph.D. from St Andrew's University, UK; discusses the evolution of aviation from Second World War and continuum from military to civil; his interests in safety, accidents and performance; his research into human performance; working for the RAAF in 1976 as a civilian psychologist [Staff Officer Psychological Services]; how he was the first RAAF psychologist to work on human factors in air accident investigation; the carry over of a different attitude to safety from the Second World War; the change in attitude to human factors and systems' safety; the new and better approaches to aviation; the major impact of earlier accidents; aviation accident causation over 60 years; the link between military and civil aviation in Australia; exchange of investigators since late 1980s between civil and military; his work on almost all fatal accidents while with RAAF.
Lee speaks about joining the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation [BASI], as the first psychologist; setting up first human factors branch and recruiting into BASI; pioneering human factors in civil aviation at BASI; his appointment as in Director 1989 to 1999; BASI and multi-disciplinary approaches; Jim Reason and his main work in incorporating human error and corporate factors; the repetitive nature of aircraft accidents; the creation of Air Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB); the limitations of visual systems and cognitive issues; National Advisory Frequency problems; his involvement in investigation of major international accidents and ideas about global problems; BASIs' pro-active use of information on safety deficiencies and the importance of international contacts and how they have been maintained; promotion of awareness of human factors and setting up of links with manufacturers; international cooperation; talks about where is air safety investigation heading.
