"For weeks the fire lurked in the hills. Teasing. It wasn't a question of would it, the question was when. Each day I rose at 6.00 am, to check weather reports and assess the direction the fire was likely to take. I spent hours scouting the town, driving every street. I climbed roofs looking for the best vantage points. At 1.30 pm on January 30th wildfire finally hit without mercy, by 2.00 pm from a hilltop I photographed the small town of Omeo ablaze. The shear size of the fire compared to the tiny man running to the safety of his home was terrifying. I took three frames and jumped back into the car, if the fire reached us we had nowhere to go. For nearly four hours the fire burnt everything in it's path as it swept through the town. By the end, four houses would not be left standing. Filing images from the car back to The Age newspaper, the image appeared on the front page the following morning. It came to symbolise what the town endured that day."--Simon O'Dwyer.
