- Summary:
-
This published ship's log by the cooper and ship's clerk on the whaling Barque Emerald describes the vessel's circumnavigation of the world in 1838-1839. A large proportion of the log covers the period between October 1838 and October 1839 when the Emerald was mainly in Australian waters, particularly near or on the southern coast of Western Australia. It provides detail on marine and land animals and how whaling was carried out. There are descriptions of local Aborigines, encounters with British, French and other whalers, and of areas where they landed, including an abandoned whaling settlement, and Hobart where they stocked up with provisions before the long journey back to the United States.
