Hurley departed Sydney in December 1920 and spent three months among the islands of the Torres Strait. He travelled on to Papua via Daru Island and his visit to Papua lasted from 27 March to 19 August 1921. Hurley's second expedition to Papua lasted from 6 September 1922 until 26 January 1923. Hurley stayed with Lieutenant-Governor J.H.P. (Hubert) Murray at Government House in Port Moresby at the conclusion of his 1920-1921 expedition and again at the beginning of his 1922-1923 expedition.
