Julian Bickersteth was born and educated in England. He talks of his early life and family; his degree in theology from Oxford; working for a merchant bank, following his graduation; his decision to come to Australia; teaching at Timbertop in Victoria; his return to England where he became interested in furniture and worked for an antique dealer; his training in furniture restoration at the West Deane Foundation; marrying in Australia; going back to England for 18 months; the offer of a position as furniture conservator at the Powerhouse Museum; leaving there in 1987 to work for the Campbell Group where he established Campbell Conservation; the management buyout of the company and the establishment of International Conservation Services (ICS); he talks of his views on conservation; on changes and growth in the profession; the particular challenges of setting up a private conservation practice that operates to museum standards and of the need to diversify and expand his range of services.
