The purpose of this study was to find out whether relationships existed between the selected variables of school size, academic qualification, teacher training, teaching experience, headteachership, and the amount of time spent on teaching, administration, supervision, and non-related matters and the views of primary headteachers on curriculum guidelines. The review of the literature, in two parts, synthesized the parameters of the rational empirical model of curriculum development to form the survey questionnaire and discussed the relevant literature on the effects of selected variables on curriculum and related matters. In the study, 75 primary headteachers, representing the three school sizes of small, medium and large were selected randomly from all over the country. The data collected were analysed and the mean, standard deviation and one-way analysis of variance at the .05 level of significance were used to test the null hypotheses.
The results of the study, with one exception, showed that no relationships existed between the selected variables and the views of primary headteachers on curriculum guidelines. A significant difference was only observed in the relationship between the school sizes and the views of primary headteachers on organization and methods of curriculum guidelines. The major conclusions of the study suggested that the parameters of the rational empirical model of curriculum development are generally supported by the primary headteachers and that the leadership role of primary headteachers in curriculum needs to be studied in its totality in order to understand the complex nature of relationships between leadership and schooling.
