A Phase I archaeological survey of 404.7 ha (1,000 ac) of land surrounding the Conchas Reservoir, San Miguel County, New Mexico, was conducted by the Agency for Conservation Archaeology of Eastern New Mexico University and the author in 1982 and 1983. The investigations were conducted primarily on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers flood easement property surrounding the reservoir to determine the physical characteristics, horizontal dimensions, and location of cultural resources within this zone. Thirty archaeological sites and 113 isolated manifestations are recorded from a stratified sample of 100 4.05 ha (10 ac) units. All of the locations contain evidence of single and/or multicomponent short-term seasonal occupation or utilization and suggests that there were no significant differences between lowland and upland occupation and utilization through time.
Artifactual evidence exhibiting affinities to Paleo-Indian, Archaic, Plains Woodland, Plains Village, and Plains Nomad cultural developments are recorded at 17 of the sites; 13 of the sites contain assemblages which can not be dated. The artifact analysis indicates that local lithic raw materials were primarily used to manufacture the majority of flaked tools with the exception of projectile points. Nonlocally occurring raw materials and diagnostic artifacts such as projectile points and ceramics suggest affinities, contacts, and or seasonal movements to the east, south, west, and to a lesser extent, north. In particular, the artifact analysis indicates that the project area was occupied primarily by populations with strong affinities to cultural developments originating on the Southern Plains. The analysis also indicates these populations in turn interacted with or to a much lesser extent coexisted with populations exhibiting affinities to cultural developments from the Southwest.
