Edward Schillebeeckx, (1914-), a Flemish Dominican theologian who has written extensively on doctrinal, ecclesial, and social issues, has not produced a major work on the Trinity. However, as this study will show, Schillebeeckx's recent theology is implicitly trinitarian. He makes an important contribution to the revitalization of trinitarian theology which has marked Christian denominations in the last three decades. The aim of this dissertation is to explore the trinitarian theology of Schillebeeckx's trilogy, namely, Jesus: An Experiment in Christology (1974), Christ: The Experience of Jesus as Lord (1977), and Church: The Human Story of God (1989), and to examine the "liberating" nature of the God so presented. The first chapter raises four issues of contemporary trinitarian theology: distinction between the "economic" and "immanent" Trinity, the principle of unity in the Trinity, the meaning of divine person, and the practical implications of trinitarian theology.
The second chapter then outlines aspects of Schillebeeckx's pre-1974 trinitarian theology for later comparison with the trilogy. The third chapter discusses Schillebeeckx's treatment of the three trinitarian persons as individually "liberating," while the fourth chapter studies his recent doctrine of the Trinity within the context of contemporary theology noted in chapter 1. In the final chapter I argue that Schillebeeckx's positive contribution includes his emphasis on the priority of the triune God acting as liberator in history, human participation in the effecting of liberation, the linking of praxis with God-concepts, and the political implications of the Trinity. On the other hand, I suggest that Schillebeeckx's recent theology does not always express clearly the "immanent" Trinity and that the nature and role of the Holy Spirit is not made sufficiently clear. The dissertation concludes that Schillebeeckx's recent works are profoundly trinitarian.
Their emphasis on a God who liberates is due to Schillebeeckx's renewed christology, to his attempt to respond to people's search for God in a world that altered markedly during the 1960s, and to a changed methodology that emerged as a result.
