This dissertation focuses on the philosophy and methodology of Ivan Galamian. Included is an in-depth review of his book Principles of Violin Playing and Teaching which presents his approach and analysis of violin technique. In addition, a comparative review is made between Galamian and two other violin method books Pierre Marie Francois de Sales Baillot's "L'Art du Violin" published in 1835 and Carl Flesch's "Art of Violin Playing" published in 1923. These two authors were chosen in a comparison with Galamian for their stature as violin pedagogues, historic time span of critical analysis and performance practice and the similar format of presentation and written approach. Galamian's methodology will be shown to have great merit for its problem solving analysis. However, (in the writers opinion) in comparison with the two other authors his approach is lacking in a musical foundation and emphasis.
