Spatial ability, latency and accuracy of performance in computerized three-dimensional object manipulation [microform]

The current study investigated how performance on computer based three-dimensional object manipulation interfaces is mediated by spatial ability. Research questions included: (1) Is a direct or indirect interface more easily used by high or low spatial users? (2) Does a direct interface help low spatial users undertake more complex transformations on three-dimensional objects? (3) Are there differences in the ways high and low spatial users operate the interface?Forty-eight participants took part in three experimental sessions. In session one, four computer-based spatial ability tests determined participants' 'Visualization' (VZ) and 'Speeded Rotation' (SR) abilities. In sessions two and three, three-dimensional object tasks were completed using 'Direct' or 'Indirect' interfaces. The object tasks required participants to bring one image into alignment with another. Latency and error were recorded.
Thirty-six trials required movement of the object through a range of directions and distances. A repeated measures analysis of variance was conducted with latency and error performance as separate dependent variables. Between subject variables were: Gender (Male or Female), Order (Direct or Indirect first), VZ Ability, and SR Ability. Within subject variables were: Interface (Direct and Indirect), Object (Toy, House, and Shepard), Axes (Simple and Complex), and Distance (Short, Medium, and Long). Regression analyses were conducted for significant interactions found in the analysis of variance results. Scatterplots and regression lines were plotted to determine how VZ or SR abilities related to latency and error performance.
In order to investigate possible trade offs between latency and error performance and how those might relate to spatial ability, each participant's VZ and SR scores were converted to deciles and plotted on a three-dimensional scatter plot with latency and error axes. Results showed that the direct interface was faster and more accurate for all participants--whatever their VZ or SR ability. The direct interface provided a large improvement in speed of performance for lower VZ and SR ability users, without handicapping higher ability users. Higher SR ability participants also performed more accurately with the direct interface. The accuracy of lower SR ability participants was about the same with both interfaces.
