The dissertation presented is a transcription for violin of Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) six cello Suites (BWV 1007-1012). The cello works, when transcribed for violin, are less technically demanding than the three Partitas and three Sonatas for solo violin. As a means of introducing a young student to Bach's compositional style and technical vocabulary, these Suites have significant potential value. In transcribing these works for violin, the first five Suites have been transposed up a fifth from the original key. The last Suite, as transcribed for violin, has remained in the original key of D major. From the original version, the notes that are written on the C-string for cello have been transposed up one octave so that they fit within the range of the violin. In preparing the violin edition of the cello suites, the primary reference source was the Anna Magdalena manuscript, along with other cello editions.
An explanation of editorial markings (primarily bowing and fingerings as performed in the dissertation recitals) constitutes the first Appendix. The second Appendix comprises the program for the two recitals and the third Appendix comprises the program notes.**This dissertation includes two CDs. This dissertation is compound (contains both a paper copy and CDs as part of the dissertation).
