In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Venice was among the leading art and music centers of the world. A major portion of its fame was derived from the chapel of San Marco and its unique ceremonial and sacred music. As the Maestro di cappella (master of the chapel) at San Marco from 1603-1609, Giovanni Croce was a leader in the development of this festive Venetian polychoral style. Although Croce, a contemporary of Giovanni Gabrieli, was well known in his time and is frequently mentioned in current historical studies, many of his sacred choral works remain unavailable in modern editions. It has been the purpose of this study to provide a modern performance edition of Croce's second book of eight-part motets as part of an overall examination of the historical and stylistic developments in Venice in the late sixteenth century.
Originally published in 1595 by Giacomo Vincenti of Venice, the print from which these editions were made consists of a series of eight vocal partbooks and one organ partbook, which utilizes a basso seguente format compiled from the lowest notes of the vocal bass parts. Although Croce was a conservative Venetian regarding compositional style, a few of these motets are representative of the transitional era between the Renaissance and the Baroque, placing a strong emphasis on the text as a determinant of the musical style. Croce's motets are a valuable addition to the limited polychoral repertoire, and as such, deserve more attention than they are frequently accorded today.
