This study constructed an exploratory index of the art of a group of Australian Aborigines in the process of culture change. The index provided a base for generating hypotheses concerning the art identified. A literature review--mainly from the fields of art education and anthropology--was conducted with the following emphases: (1) art and aesthetics in non-literate societies, (2) Australian Aborigines and their art, (3) art and culture change, (4) ethnographic method, and (5) the photographic camera as a research tool. The information search, plus a period of orientation was preparatory to doing exploratory fieldwork. In conducting the fieldwork this researcher borrowed from ethnographic method in order to collect data for formulating the exploratory index. Once constructed, the index was analyzed for the purpose of generating hypotheses concerning the art of a people in culture change.
