Wesley Uniting Church Orange, New South Wales, is a city church situated at the centre of a rich rural orchard and grazing district. This dissertation "Strategy for Growth in a Rural City Church - Orange Wesley United" traces the history of, and provides the basis for expanding, and gives new direction to the ministry of a downtown rural, city church to suit the needs of a cosmopolitan congregation. It reviews past developments in the history of the Orange district and of the church. It assesses the present day situation of both church and community life highlighting the needs of both, listing the strengths and weaknesses evident and the distinctive features of ministering to people in a rural city and district. One chapter describes the major development of the Parish Centre in 1984 which itself is the result of the study and application of church growth principles. Strategies for growth are outlined to suit such a ministry based on proven methods and felt needs.
The dissertation includes theological reflections upon the writer's own ministry in terms of where his pilgrimage has led him to this point in time and of his hopes for the future. The purpose for this writing is to--(a) Draw upon a study of Church Growth through Fuller Seminary, its theology and its theory. (b) Reflect theologically upon thirty years of practical experience in ministry with reference to certain measurable goals achieved. (c) Assess the present and likely future needs of the Australian Church in a rural setting, both to show understanding of the need for growth in an alive, evangelical church, and to set some goals and to determine priorities and strategies which will both enable and consolidate growth.
