For many years the Portuguese ethno-linguistic group has been emigrating to English-speaking (and other) countries. The people are faced with socio-psycho-econo-poli-cultura-linguistic adjustments--the acculturation process as an integral part of their immigrational odyssey. The author has embarked upon Portuguese-speaking immi- grants' and their succeeding generations' linguistic borrowing needs in English-speaking communities of the United States and abroad; more specifically, in six New England communities: New Bedford, Fall River, Taunton, Cambridge, Somerville and Lowell--all in Massachusetts. He has coined the neologism Portingles and uses it to identify English borrowed terms and expressions in Portuguese speech.
The purpose of the study is to identify, to the extent possible, Portingles terms and expressions generally used in speech throughout selected Portuguese-speaking communities in New England, with some exploratory investigation in California and in other English-speaking regions such as Canada, Australia, the Republic of South Africa.... The entire effort results in an extensive alphabetized glossary of Portingles terms and expressions with given sentences to demonstrate contextual use. The author provides the Portingles term/expression, the standard (or colloquial) English term/expression from which it derives, and the standard Portuguese usage.
The author spent a number of years collecting data employing the most diverse methods: the use of questionnaires, and verbal interviews in the Portuguese and English languages, observation of Portuguese-speaking Americans during outdoor and indoor social and religious feasts, in homes, at social, recreational, and religious clubs, schools, Portuguese stores as well as in social agencies catering to the wellbeing of the citizen (such as the Division of Employment Security, immigrant assistance centers...). The author gained much information through readings of many books, articles and Portuguese and English newspapers from the United States and abroad. Listening to Portuguese radio talk shows also contributed to the collection of data. The study is intended to serve as an educational reference and extensive, usable glossary of Portingles expressions for those working with groups speaking Portingles.
