Bernard Skarbek talks about his mother and father in Poland; his formal education; the significance of his names; the family's standard of living in Poland before World War II; his studies in commerce, religion; the German invasion of Poland (September 1939); the Russian invasion; his arrest and deportation to Siberia (1940); the conditions in Siberian camps; the 1941 amnesty and the formation of the 2nd Polish Corps under General Anders; his service in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy, including the battle for Monte Cassino (1944); evacuation to the United Kingdom after the war; meeting wife-to-be in Kinross (Scotland)
Skarbek discusses his discharge from the army (1948); employment in London; migrating to Canberra, Australia (1956); the voyage on the 'Himalaya' (1956); life for Poles in Canberra in the 1950s; his work experiences in Canberra; transferring from the Canberra Brickworks to the public service; his involvement in Polish community; the establishment of the Polish Club in Civic; his involvement in the broader non-Polish community; honours received from Poland; his sense of ethnic identity; return visits to Poland; the future of the Polish culture in Australia and the differences between the Poles of World War II vintage and those who came here in the 1980s; he concludes with some words in Polish.
