Ashton's Circus is the longest-surviving circus in Australia, pre-dating most others in the English-speaking world. The circus was founded in Launceston, Tasmania, in February 1851 by James Henry Ashton, a man schooled in the tradition of English circus. When founder James Henry Ashton died in 1889, his son Fred, then aged 22, inherited the circus. The circus continued to be handed down throughout the family, until the late 1990s when three further circuses came to be operated by the Ashton family: Ashton Entertainment by Jan Ashton-Rodriguez and family; Circus Joseph Ashton by Joseph Ashton and family; Lorraine Ashton's Classic Circus by Lorrain Ashton-Grant and family. See futher material held in the PROMPT collection under "Circus Joseph Ashton".
- Notes:
- Approximately 15 circus programs held dating from the 1950s to the 1990s. See also manuscripts, posters, archived websites (in PANDORA) and photographs relating to Ashton's Circus held in the NLA. Futher material held in the PROMPT collection under "Circus Joseph Ashton".
