Tom McDonnell was born in Melbourne and took degrees in Law and Arts at Melbourne University. In 1965 he joined the Sutherland-Williamson Opera Company and sang Belcore in L'Elisir D'Amore. During that season, he was awarded the Joan Sutherland Scholarship for further study. Tom McDonnell came to London in 1966. He sang the title role in Eugene Onegin on the 1969 Glyndbourne tour and made his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in the world premiere of Henze's We come to the river. He joined the English National Opera and remained a member of the company until the end of the 1974/75 season. His many roles with them included Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro, Strephon in Lolanthe, and Germont in La Traviata. In 1981/82, he performed in Cosi Fan Tutte, and L'Egisto for the Scottish Opera.
