- The 1879 Sydney International Exhibition was Australia's first international exhibition following the example set by London's Great Exhibition in 1851. In December 1878, the New South Wales government committed itself to the Sydney International Exhibition. The Colonial Architect, James Barnet, designed an enormous cruciform building which was erected in Sydney's Domain at a cost of 191,800 pounds. Inside the Garden Palace (based on the design of London's Crystal Palace of 1851), twenty kingdoms, republics and colonies were represented. Raw produce and manufactured goods were arranged in national courts with special displays of machinery, agricultural products and art, which the map details. Seven govt. depts. such as the Dept. of Education and Sciences provided and arranged a great variety of exhibits that reflected daily life and achievement in the Colony. The Garden Palace itself was lost in a spectacular fire that gutted the entire building in September 1882.
