MS Acc05.084 comprises correspondence, drafts, diaries, notebooks, interview transcripts, press cuttings, reviews, accounts of telephone conversations, art exhibition catalogues, publications, photographs and artists' books (20 ms boxes + 1 folio box).
The Acc12.147 instalment comprises letters to Catalano, including from Christopher Snee, Retta Hemensley, Ross Lansell, Robert Rooney, Nick Mourtzakis, Rudi Kausmann, David Keeling and Ned Johnson. Also includes a poem by Chris Wallace-Crabb, condolence letters, and correspondence relating to publication of Catalano's poems following his death (1 packet).

Poet and art critic. Gary Alfred Catalano was born in Brisbane in 1947 and educated at Trinity Grammar School, Sydney. Catalano became a poet and published several collections of poetry including, Remembering the rural life (1978), Heaven of rags: 40 poems: 1978-1981 (1982), The empire of grass: twenty-eight poems, 1983-1989 (1991), and Light and water: forty prose poems: 1980-1999 (2002). In 1992 he won the Grace Leven Prize for Poetry.
An art critic as well, Catalano wrote for The age, 1985-1990, and was the author of a number of art books, including, An intimate Australia: the landscape & recent Australian art (1985), Building a picture: interviews with Australian artists (1997), and The solitary watcher: Rick Amor and his art (2001). Catalano also contributed to Art and Australia, Island magazine, Meanjin, Quadrant, Poetry Australia, Art monthly and Southerly among other journals. The Harold White Fellowship Catalano was awarded by the National Library of Australia, for 2003, was unable to be taken up due to his death. Catalano died in Melbourne in 2002.
