Vincent Lingiari of the Gurindji people (1919-1988), was an Aboriginal leader and land rights activitist. In 1966 he led the walk-off of indigenous workers at Wave Hill Station as a protest against work and pay conditions. The protestors established a camp at Daguragu (also known as Wattie Creek) and began a 7 year fight for the Gurindji people to obtain title to their land. The Commonwealth Land Rights Act (Northern Territory) was passed in 1976. Vincent Lingiari was awarded the Order of Australia.
