- Summary:
-
Brunette Downs, once the largest cattle station in the Northern Territory, is situated in the middle of the Barkly Tableland, 350 km. north east of Tennant Creek. One fifth of the property is covered by the ephemeral Brunette lakes, Lakes Sylvester, Corella and de Burgh, which provide valuable growing and fattening country. In 1974, the lakes had been dry for 4 years, but after 4 months of incessant rain they merged and spilled over so that one third of the entire station was under the flood waters. The station gardener, Rankin, a former stockman who described himself as "pretty old", said at the time that it was "the biggest flood ever". Scenes depicted include the extent of the floods, the efforts of the stockmen to move mobs of cattle to higher ground using aluminium boats and a helicopter, and the rescue of individual animals.
