MS 7623 comprises: 1. Exhibition catalogues: "Land and people" (Kulturhuset, Stockholm, November 1988-January 1989), "Axel Poignant: Australien-land och manniskor" (Kulturhuset, Stockholm, November 1988-Jananuary 1989) and "Yolngu: Aboriginal cultures of North Australia" (Brighton Art Gallery and Museums, May-June 1988). 2. Notes, correspondence, research material, film strips relating to "Kangaroo", "Great Barrier Reef" and "Australia" and miscellaneous papers relating to the Sydney University Protest Committee, 1946-1953. 3. Cuttings draft and correspondence, 1930-1952. Also includes material by Roslyn Poignant. 4. Drafts and papers relating to Encounter at Nagalarramba and presentation for "Rom" exhibition "Its about friendship". 5. Photographs, photograph albums, licenses and programmes. Of the two photograph albums one is indicated as containing Axel Poignant's earliest attempts at photography and hand colouring. There are photographs by Axel Poignant and those collected by him. Also includes drivers license, photographers' credentials and divorce papers; and theatre programmes and educational syllabi (8 boxes, 1 folio, 1 packet).

Photographs taken in Australia, New Guinea, United Kingdom, France, USA, Malaysia and include the following subjects: Percy Grainger, Hal Missingham, Linley Wilson, Charles Blackman, John Coburn, Fritz Goro, Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker), Judith Wright, Eric Worrell, Harold White, Mary Durak, Gael Newton, Max Dupain, Strom Gould, John Antill, Sir Robert Menzies, Charles Doutney, Robert Tudwali, Chester Wilmott, Wilfrid Thomas, Rex Nan Kivell, Alison Lee, Dahl and Geoffrey Collings, Nancy Phelan, Fred McCarthy, Bernhard Hammerman, Frank Broadhurst, Kylie Tennant, Lorna Hill, Joan Sutherland, Yehudi Menuhin (17 ms boxes + 2 carton + 2 large folio boxes + 2 small folio boxes + 1 map folio).
MS Acc23.056 comprises a collection of 9 anthropological black and white prints with two advertising poster mock-ups. Some photographs are annotated, identifying them as being exhibited in Roslyn Poignant's "Observers of Man" exhibition, at the Horniman Museum and Gardens, London, 1980. The photographs were taken by prominent anthropological and colonial photographers, Sir Everard Im Thurn (1852-1932), M. W. Hilton-Simpson (1881 - 1938), Emil Torday (1875-1931) and Charles Hose (1863-1979) and depict Indigenous peoples from around the world (1 map folio).
- Biography/History:

Photographer and founder of the studios of Realist Artists. Axel Poignant was born in England of Anglo-Swedish descent in 1906. He came to Australia in the 1930s. Poignant produced art catalogues and art books for the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Anthropologist and writer. Roslyn Poignant is the author, with Axel Poignant, of Encounter at Nagalarramba (1986) and curator of "Captive lives: looking for Tambo and his companions", an exhibition for the National Library of Australia held in 1998. She is an honorary research fellow in the Department of Anthropology at University College, London and a member of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. Wife of Harald Emil Axel Poignant.
