Composer, musician and poet. Miriam Beatrice Hyde was born in Adelaide in 1913. In 1931, Hyde won the Elder Scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music, London. During her time at the College, she won three composition prizes, performed two of her concertos with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra and made several broadcasts with the BBC. She returned to Australia in 1936 and worked as a musical examiner with the Advisory Board of the Australian Music Examinations Board for 37 years, and was a councillor of the Music Teachers' Association of New South Wales.
In addition, she was a recitalist, lecturer and tutor at numerous workshops. She had three volumes of poetry published, The bliss of solitude (1941), A few poems (1942), and Dawn to dusk (1938-1947). Her autobiography, Complete accord, was published by Currency Press in 1991. In 1980, Hyde was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), and, in 1991, she was created an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of Music, Australia (HonFMusA), by the Australian Music Examinations Board in 1995. Hyde died in Sydney in 2005.
