Betty Foster and Mary Bowie born on Thursday Island (T.I.) both talk about their family backgrounds; learning to do the hula; the house parties during the war, performing at the social club, floor shows; entertaining the Australian troops; Tom Savage; Pitt family; the instruments played; hula dancing being the main entertainment for troops; going to the Regal Hall in Cairns for social nights; hula and jitterbug contests; back in Torres Straits, having floor shows in the Town Hall; Basketball teams; entertaining themselves back in Torres Strait (T.S.); dancing at parties and weddings etc.; Florence Kennedy; costumes; dancing to Hawaiian music and Seaman Dan's songs, the early dance group of about 12-14; Betty trying to teach hula to her grandchildren; Mary being asked to teach school children old time dancing; doing hula at home and at family parties; their being involved in concerts together; how at the end of war they anxious to go back to T.S.; parties in TS after the war; marriage; hula helped get people back together in TS after war; Mary doing hula at parties in Bunda Street; how both of them have to get up and dance when they hear the music; before the war being isolated on Horn Island unlike T.I., more dancing on T.I.; hula a beautiful dance, good exercise; hand movements tell a story; House Party Hula in Cairns November 2005.
