Commercial traffic in plants and animals has led to severe declines for some species while others have experienced little if any negative impacts. Given the uncertainty regarding which species are likely to be adversely affected by monetized trade, it would be useful to have a model that could predict wildlife population trajectories of wild-gathered species subsequent to commercialization. I suggest that the indigenous practice of resource taboos offers important insights into identifying species that are susceptible to over-exploitation through commercial traffic. I describe an economic conservation/extinction model based on the dual concepts of taboo and optimal foraging strategy and test the model through detailed investigations of vulnerability to perturbation in Guam flying foxes and New Zealand's extinct huia.
I suggest that the near eradication of flying foxes in Guam and the extinction of the huia in New Zealand during the twentieth century resulted from the high cultural saliency of these species coupled with the cultural loss of traditional conservation systems such as taboo. Additionally, I suggest that the monetization of Guam's economy, the resultant acquisition of firearms and the associated increase in consumption of Guam flying foxes by the island's Chamorro inhabitants may have resulted in the documented increase in neurological disease on the island. Finally, I describe some modern management strategies that may help reduce negative impacts of species commercialization.
