Jack Gutheridge, born 1916, in Horsham, Vic., talks about his family background; Army service, including his time in Malaya, on the Burma railway; farming; marriage; working as a shearer; his mother buying a second-hand Mession accordion; learning to play aged 14; father's death; father playing various instruments and brothers also playing; playing style on accordion; the dance halls being packed for dances; the effect of TV and demise of the dance halls; instruments played in the band; guitarists in the band, back before 1940s; dances: Alberts/ Barn dance/ Fox Trot etc.; old tunes father by played; parties at homes, music and games played; music nights, songs sung, bush ballads; Army songs; Army rave; Army band playing whilst they marched; songs being banned in the Concentration Camp; instruments in Prison camps; the musicians/actors, some talent amongst them; coming back to Australia; dances starting to petterout in the 50s; only playing for parties, the grand children or reunions, now; his brothers playing well, how they used to camp out, away from farm.
