- Summary:
-
"The Cumberland/Gloucester Street site in The Rocks has been an open space since the demolition of a large shed in the 1930s. This shed, an engineering workshop built in 1917, had itself taken the place of some 30 houses and shops demolished after 1900. It was these buildings, the earliest built by 1795, that formed the basis of an archaeological excavation undertaken in 1994 to recover evidence of the lives of more than a thousand people who lived, worked and died here for over a century (Plan of the archaeological remains). The remains of their houses, and three quarters of a million artefacts of daily use, are important resources for the study of Sydney’s past"--About the site.
