Penshurst on-line started in November 1998 as a community project by members of Advance Penshurst, and Mt. Rouse & District Historical Society, both non-profit organisations. Their aims are to promote present day Penshurst, as well as knowledge of its colorful history. Penshurst On Line has now merged with Penshurst News. Penshurst is a small (population approx. 500) township in Victoria, situated 277km southwest of Melbourne, 70km north of Warrnambool, on the north-south tourist route between the Great Ocean Road, and the Grampians mountain range, 30km to the north. The name Penshurst is derived from the Saxon word pen, meaning "top", and hurst, meaning "woods", the latter presumably becoming forest.
