Sally Bird made the acquaintance of Manoly Lascaris and Patrick White while walking her pug in the park. Subsequently Manoly Lascaris sent her a copy of O Pug! by Stevie Smith. Bird's condolence letter to Lascaris is contained in Series 26 of the Papers of Patrick White.
