Typescript diary extracts of the 1953-54 Heard Island expedition describing the establishment of the Australian base on the Antarctic continent at Mawson, 13 Jan-17 Mar. 1954, and an account of two attempts by John Bechervaise, Peter Shaw and Fred Elliott to climb the mountain Big Ben on Heard Island, 19 Aug.-18 Nov. 1953. Includes colour photocopies of photographs and maps. 2. Diaries of the 1955-56 Mawson expedition, 7 Jan. - 31 Dec. 1955 & 1 Jan.-6 Mar. 1956. 3. Diary of the 1958 Mawson expedition, 3 Jan. 1958- 28 Feb. 1959. 4. Scrapbook, 1954-59, containing newspaper cuttings on ANARE expeditions (particularly 1958) and Dr Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary's treks to the South Pole with the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition.

Fred Elliott was a weather observer with the Australian National Antarctic Research (ANARE) expeditions to Heard Island (1953), and Mawson base in Antarctica (1955 & 1958). Extracts from Fred Elliott's diaries have been published in the ANARE Club journal Aurora.
