Arts administrator. William (Bill) Anthony Gillespie was born in Washington, DC, in 1950 and has lived in Australia since 1990. Gillespie has had a distinguished career as an arts manager in both the United States and Australia, including as general director of the State Opera of South Australia from 1988 to 1995, prior to taking up the position of artistic director of the State Opera's production of Wagner's "The Ring" in 1998. He has taught arts management in South Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and India and has served on the National Board of the Australian Youth Orchestra. He was director of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts from 1999 to 2002, and has been general manager and chief executive of the Australian Chamber Orchestra since 2002. In 2001 Gillespie was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the arts as an administrator, particularly the State Opera of South Australia.
