Raymond Giles radio career started 75 years ago. He discusses his early memories of listening to radio; joining the AIF as a signalman in the Eighth Division during World War II; going to the Marconi School for radio training; the RAAF; joining the Adelaide branch of the Dept. of Postmaster General (PMG) which provided technical services to the Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC); the arrival of the Pyrox wire recorder which made it possible to record outside; other equipment and accessories; 'Eight ball' microphones; the ABC recording vehicle; recording technology; being sent by the PMG in 1948 to record the American Australian Scientific Expedition to Arnhem Land; going to Delissaville, Oenpelli and Bathurst Is.; Charles P. Mountford; Colin Simpson; Aboriginal corroborees and other performances; Aboriginal assistants; Aboriginal responses; Bill Harney; recording the bird chorus at Oenpelli; interviews recorded with the expedition scientists; his decision to give up radio work because of hearing damage; farming.
