Christine Phillips was born 1963, London, the eldest of nine children, she attended St Joseph's College, Echuca, Victoria. She worked in a medical mission in Zambia, and later undertaking research into indigenous health in Alice Springs. She graduated in medical studes from the University of Melbourne in 1988. Since 1995 she worked as a general practitioner in Canberra. In 2001 she began working in the Medical Service associated with Companion House, Canberra's torture and trauma counselling and support service for refugees. She is also a Senior Lecturer, Social Foundations of Medicine, Academic Unit of General Practice and Community Health at the Australian National University.
