The Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) which since 1947 have served Australia in south polar regions. Its aim is the exploration of the Antarctic and subantarctic regions with the objective of improving our understanding the processes and resources of this vast region and of what the region can tell us about our planet in general. In 1948 the Antarctic Division was established to administer ANARE. ANARE includes scientific and exploratory activities in Antarctica by both government and non-government bodies and individuals, with a central focus on scientific research. Its membership includes Australian government agencies involved with Antarctic research, such as the Antarctic Division itself, the Bureau of Meteorology, the Australian Geological Survey Organisation, the Australian Surveying and Land Information Group and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). It also includes non-government organisations, including Australian universities and other research institutions as well as foreign research organisations.
The Australian Antarctic Territory (AAT) is the part of Antarctica claimed by Australia and is the largest territory of Antarctica claimed by any nation. It consists of all the islands and territory south of 60° S and between 44°38' E and 160° E, except for Adélie Land (136°11' E to 142°02' E), which divides the territory into Western AAT (the larger portion) and Eastern AAT. It is bounded by Queen Maud Land in the West and by Ross Dependency in the East. It is the largest of the Antarctic territories and the estimated area is 6,119,818 square kilometres. The territory is inhabited only by the staff of research stations. The Australian Antarctic Division administers the area primarily by maintaining three year-round stations (Mawson Station, Davis Station and Casey Station), which support various research projects.
